The other day, I was on the phone with a junior business analyst who said that her main struggle is lack of experience and wants to be a more impactful BA. She said that she is stuck taking meeting minutes and writing work instructions and was concerned that she has not enough exposure to the full range of BA activities.
In my opinion, the lack of experience and being an impactful business analyst are 2 separate things. I say this because you can still make an impact with the skills and abilities and talents that you have now, without having all of the desired BA experience. This is because you have something in you right now that is worthwhile.
Now, when I say impactful, it doesn’t mean that every day you will be transforming businesses and changing the world. Being impactful means making a worthwhile contribution to your work on a daily basis.
Of course, experience over time helps you be more and more impactful. However, again, you still have something to contribute with the knowledge and abilities that you have now.
So, the challenge here is to identify your current skills and abilities that you can use productively. It helps also to be confident in speaking up in the right context, asking questions where relevant, and challenging assumptions if possible. Give it a go and you will find something of value within you that will make an impact. Start with smaller things.
This is just one piece of the puzzle. To be impactful in your business analysis career, sometimes some extra help to get all of those pieces helps. That is why I have opened up a few time slots in my calendar to help you do just that.
